Author's Note: This is analyzing the causes and effects of the generator breaking down in the book City of Ember. I wrote this to demonstrate my understanding of cause and effect.
The major event is that the power is staying out a little more each power outage. What is the cause of it the 200 year old generator is breaking down a little bit at a time every week. The more it breaks down the longer the black outs are.
The effect is when the power goes out completely the people will not be able to get out and will not be able to find their food, and they will die. If the generator didn't break down the people wouldn't be worried about a complete outage that never comes back on.
